Abstract

The study is to develop the science-based STEAM program for the free-year curriculum in middle school and then to implement and investigate the effectiveness of the program in the attitude towards science, STEAM literacy and the interest of career in STEM fields. The STEAM program was developed based on the topics in chemistry and biology related with the curriculum of elementary and middle school science. The program developed was implemented for the 59 students in middle school where is located in Yong-in city of Gyeonggi province for eight weeks. The pre-post test of survey about the attitude towards science, STEAM literacy, and the interest of career in STEM fields were conducted for the students to analyze the results of survey with SPSS statistic program. The results are followed. First, the middle school students’ attitude towards science was not changed significantly with the science-based STEAM program. Second, the program was effective for the domain of caring in STEAM literacies in statistically significant(p<0.01). Third, the program was also effective significantly in improving for the interest of career in science area among STEM fields(p<0.05). Thus, the science-based STEAM program was developed and implemented effectively to improve the students’ caring domain in STEAM literacies and their interest in science’ career during the free-year curriculum of middle school.
