Abstract

Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) uses radio waves to detect targets in all-weather conditions. The latest SAR development enables to operate drone-based SAR systems that can detect low radar cross section (RCS) targets hidden around foliage areas in mountain sides. In drone SAR equipment, low weight constraints limit the battery capacity and pulse sampling rate, leading to image quality degradation. In this study, we attempt to enhance the image quality of power limited drone SAR system by applying compression sensing algorithms. After conducting on-site field experiments, an adaptive target detection process is adopted toward low RCS targets concealed in vegetation areas. It is shown that drone SARs can be used to obtain images of various underground targets or targets hidden under foliage using enhanced compressive sensing algorithms.
