Abstract

We perform an energy independent ππ phase-shift analysis in the energy range 0.5 < M ππ < 1 GeV using high statisticsl π −p → π − π +n data at 17.2 GeV/ c. The method is based on an amplitude analysis of the production process and the extrapolation of the dominant π exchange amplitude to the π exchange pole. We critically investigate the stability of the analysis and compare our results with those of other analyses. We determine the mass and width of the ϱ resonance to be 770 ± 9 and 143 ± 13 MeV respectively.
