Abstract

An epidemiological survey of periodontal diseases was performed using CPITN on 181 students (aged 15 to 18 years) at Nagashima High School, Kagoshima Prefecture. A little less than 90% of those students had symptoms of periodontal diseases worse than gingival bleeding after gentle probing and also had 20% (girls) to 40% (boys) higher rates of supra-or subgingival calculus as compared with the high school students in Kitakyushu. Approximately 90% of the Nagashima high school students needed oral hygiene instruction and 80% or more, oral prophylaxis. However, none required complex treatment of periodontal diseases. These findings suggest the necessity of oral hygiene instruction and screening for periodontal diseases at this period.
