Abstract

Airplane landing gears are subjected to a wide range of excitation conditions due to variations in sink speed and road condition. The purpose of the landing gear damper is to minimize the amount of impact that is transmitted to the aircraft due to the shock at landing. An existing passive type damper for landing gear is hard to satisfy these various conditions. A semi-active type magnetorheological (MR) damper is one of attractive solutions to resolve the problems. A semi-active type MR damper not only achieves the required damping force, but also is able to be operated in passive type damper even in the case of non-control, which is more secure than active type. This work presents design and analysis of MR damper. Firstly, a landing gear using MR damper is designed followed by formulation of damper model based on the required damping force and packaging constraints. Secondly, magnetic circuit is designed by doing case study in terms of pole length and core length to make strong magnetic intensity under packaging constraints. Finally, in order to demonstrate the performance of the proposed damper for the landing gear, computer simulations are performed.
