Abstract

This paper documents the efforts to propagate the traditional theatre form Makyung through the system of education at the National Academy of Arts, Culture and Heritage Malaysia. Beyond the educational institution, several individuals have becom e key players in the landscape of performing arts in Malaysia through organizations they have established or through the agency of the state. The arts workers have realized that merely preserving traditional theatre as a cultural artefact makes it merely an object of curiosity. These individuals have successfully brought Makyung to new public urban sites through innovations within the genre, keeping it relevant to contemporary society.
