Abstract

To obtain the 2SUPnd/SUP moment of the waiting time in a queue, it is common to use the 2SUPnd/SUP derivative of the Laplace-Stieltjes transform (LST) of the waiting time distribution. Although we obtain the LST of the waiting time distribution, it is not easy to differentiate the LST due to its complexity. Moreover, we may not obtain the LST itself. In this work, we suggest a novel approach to obtain the 2SUPnd/SUP moment of the waiting time without using the LST of the waiting time distribution. We aim to extend the heuristic approach, firstly suggested by Chae and Lee (1995), in order to obtain the 2SUPnd/SUP moment of the waiting time of the M/G/1 queue with generalized vacations.
