Abstract

Melon seedlings, collected from sand dune areas at Kumihama and Amino in Kyoto Prefecture in March, 1992, showed browning lesions at the basal part and wilting, followed by damping-off soon after transplanting. Examination of root pieces yielded only Pythium spinosum P. spinosum and P. irregulare were isolated from rhizosphere soil, while no such species were detected in non-rhizos-phere soil. Pathogenicity of these two species was determined on melon (cv. BONUS No.2 and Earl's Seinu Spring I) under greenhouse conditions. Two species were proved to pathogenic on both cultivars of melon.
