Abstract

A 1946 French Review article about a French-speaking enclave in Ohio inspired us to search for recordings made by the author, William Marion Miller. Although we have not located the recordings, we have (re)discovered several communities where residents are aware of and interested in their French heritage. This project has led us to conclude that Miller overstated the speed and oversimplified the nature of the French settlers' adaptation to their new home. Our research reminds us of the weight of the French presence in North America and the fact that French contributions have been largely overlooked in our country's narrative.
