Abstract

The applicability of a method to predict the amount of oil outflow from a double hull ship with a ruptured tank bottom based on hydraulic balance inside and outside the tank is investigated for three types of test oil in addition to experimental conditions of tank sizes, tank configurations and conditions of cargo loading. The amount of oil outflow was measured using a VLCC 1/50 scale model tank with double hull under the following conditions: oil densities=810~900 Kg/m3 (15oC)m dynamic oil viscosities=3.1~100 cSt (15oC), double bottom heights=double side widths=0.2m, 0.04m, 0.06m, oil tank cross sectional areas=0.26~0.52m2, initial oil levels=0.2~0.5m, drafts=0.2~0.45m and simulated circular puncture size=71mm . The predicted amount of oil outflow is compared with the experimental data. Good agreement is shown.
