Abstract

This report investigates the use of voice as a means of transmitting information between navigation Support devices and vessel navigators to achieve effective support for the navigator by both visual and audio information. Here, experiments using voice with the ARPA system and the problems encountered on an actual vessel are described. The results of the investigation are as follows : (1) The possibility of using voice and key code as a means of information transmission between the vessel navigator and ARPA has been confirmed : ARPA information is effectively provided and obtained. (2) When furnishing ARPA information by voice, the necessity of standardizing the "voice language" being used is now being considered. (3) When using voice to obtain information form ARPA, it has been learned that the recognition rate of voice information must be upgraded.
