Abstract

The article deals with the initial period of modern development of Sunday school as one of the elements of the religious education system, restored by the Russian Orthodox Church. Based on the materials of legislation, periodicals, as well as oral sources (memoirs of participants of the events), the course of this process in the Rostov region in the 1990s and 2000s is restored. Data on the number of Sunday schools in dynamics are given. It is concluded that during the period of the patriarchate of Aleksiy II (Ridiger) (1990-2008), requirements for a modern Sunday school and local church administrative structures for the organization of educational activities were formed. Methodological base for Sunday schools and the training of catechists also began to be formed with the participation of regions (including the Rostov region) during this period.
