Abstract

This paper deals with the quantitative accuracy of directional wave spectra which are estimated from a set of simultaneous records of ship motions. The Extended Maximum Likelihood Method with a stochastic approach is used using a multidimensional auto regressive model. A method for correction with the use of cross spectra of ship motion is also proposed. Some results of model tests which were carried out in a wave tank with an array of wave height sensors are given. In order to examine the estimating accuracy, directional wave spectra estimated from ship motions are compared with those based on the array of wave height sensors. The direction in which a directional wave spectrum takes the maximum value can be estimated by this method. See also abstract no. 92071622.
