Abstract

The purpose of this study was to verify the relationship between caring climate and exercise adherence intention in women university students based on hierarchical model of intrinsic and extrinsic motivation(HMIMM)(Vallerand, 1997). 319 students who participating regular exercise over one month surveyed assessing caring climate, basic psychological needs, intrinsic motivation, flow and exercise adherence intention. 311 data were analyzed. For data processing, SPSS 18.0 Program was used to perform Cronbach’s a and descriptive statistics. AMOS 21.0 Program was used for confirmatory factor analysis and structural equation modeling analysis. The result showed based on HEIME that, caring climate was positively related to the basic psychological needs, which, in turn, was related positively to intrinsic motivation and then to flow and exercise adherence intention. And exercise duration difference was observed on caring climate → autonomy, caring climate → competence and autonomy →intrinsic motivation, beginner was higher than intermediate class. This finding suggest that instructors would consider to create caring climate rather than competitive climate to improve student’s instructors depending on individual’s exercise duration.
