Abstract

The objective of this study is to propose a course plan that uses havruta to improve the debating skills of international students studying in South Korea and to verify its effects. The experiment was conducted twice in July 2018 by holding debate classes that used a general form and debate classes using havruta, with 11 Level 5 students of a language education institute attached to a university in Seoul as the subjects. First, the general form of a debate class was held in the classroom. The debate using havruta was divided into out-of-class activities and in-class activities. In the survey of learners conducted after the two debating classes were held, 63.6% of learners responded that the debate class using havruta was helpful for them in improving their debating skills. Regarding the effects of the debate in havruta form on improving their critical thinking, the learners gave the highest score to the statement that they could now clearly determine their opponent
