Abstract

The reviewed book covers almost all prose and dramatic works of P.K. de Marivaux. Basing on hermeneutic approach P. Hartman analyzes the novels, essays and comedies by Marivaux and reveals the originality of the latter’s experimental metapoetics. Focusing exclusively on some aesthetic and stylistic features of the Marivaux’s texts (without involving any sociocultural aspects) the French scholar brings to light the specifics of interaction between empathy and irony by Marivaux, originality of his aesthetic humanism, and demonstrates the integrity of the whole corpus of his texts showing close connection between his preferred techniques of aesthetic play and the literary style in all the works under consideration.
