Abstract

The 5′ control region of the agropine synthase gene ( ags ) from a Ti plasmid was fused to a β-glucuronidase (GUS) reporter gene, and the fused gene (Pags-GUS) was introduced into tobacco ( Nicotiana tabacum cv.Wisconsin 38) cells by a binary vector system.Studies were made on ags promoter activity in callus and shoot tissues.GUS activity was clearly detected in calli, but scarcely detected in leaves. This suggests that the ags promoter is not constitutive.Expression of the Pags-GUS in regenerated plants was restricted to apical meristems.
