Abstract

This chapter evaluates the usefulness of the hyperspectral imagery (HSI) in vegetation mapping onboard a Chinese HJ-1A small satellite. Fractional vegetation cover (FVC) is an important surface microclimate parameter for characterizing land surface vegetation cover as well as the most effective indicator for assessing desertication and crop growth condition. The HJ-1/HSI data were used to calculate the narrow-band vegetation index by using the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer leaf area index product as supporting data, which were then applied to a subpixelCONTENTS9.1 Introduction .................................................................................204 9.1.1 Use of hyperspectral data in vegetation mapping ...............204 9.1.2 Preprocessing of hyperspectral data ...................................204
