Abstract
Sensitized by SF 6,Fe nano-particles (20–40 nm) containing 70.6 wt% γ-Fe were prepared by CW CO 2 laser-induced decomposition of Fe(CO) 5. An oxidation study of the Fe nanoparticles was made at 200°C– 650°C. At 200° – 300°C γ-Fe 2O 3 nanoparticles were formed; above 300°C the γ-Fe 2O 3 phase gradually oxidized to α-Fe 2O 3. The oxide powders formed through oxidation remained nanometer in size. The Fe and its oxide particles were characterized by TEM, electron diffraction and XRD.
