Abstract

Thanks to increased accessibility and use of Internet and mobile devices including smartphones, and the development of various applications and online platforms, it has become possible to obtain big data from a large number of people with relatively little cost and effort. In this paper, the crowdsourcing method as a novel approach in qualitative research is introduced to be used in physical education and sport studies. The five phases of crowdsourcing method include preparing, forming crowds, collecting crowdsourced data, coding and analyzing crowdsourced data, and generating and disseminating findings. The required tasks in each phase are described with the characteristics and considerations. Through crowdsourcing, it is possible to invite sizable and demographically diverse stakeholders without constraints of time and space in an online platform, where dynamic interactions occur among participants. The iterative and flexible nature of crowdsourcing enables collection of rich qualitative data. Therefore, crowdsourcing can be used as an effective strategy in qualitative research in physical education and sport.
