Abstract

In recent years, ships tend to be equipped with many maneuvering devices, namely c. p. propeller, side thruster, and so on, to obtain good maneuverbility in low speed range. Especially, it is important for ferry boat to shorten approach and departure time to/from pier by using these maneuvering devices. But it is troublesome to operate these maneuvering devices simultaneously by means of each individual control handle.A joystick-type integrated control system, called KICS, has been developed since 1986 to simplify such complicated maneuvering operation and to get better maneuverbility of the ship. In KICS maneuvering, every desired motion of the ship can be performed by the operation of a joystick and a heading control dial.In this paper, the basic and auxiliary functions of KICS are presented and the mathematical description of the control algorithm is introduced.
