스페인어의 cómo no와 cómo que no의 구조와 의미에 관하여

Abstract

This paper investigates the similarities and differences between cómo no and cómo que no in Spanish. I show that cómo no and cómo que no do not behave similarly in any context, while both incomplete constructions involve a similar underlying structure to which clausal ellipsis is applied. I provide a syntactic account of the differences between cómo no and cómo que no, in which I argue that after TP-ellipsis, the former is grammaticalized as such expressing agreement or willingness of the speaker, whereas the latter, which expresses disagreement or absurd situations, still conveys the original meaning of the wh-word cómo as well as the negative polarity. I propose that cómo que is located in Speech act Phrase, expressing the speaker’s evaluation of the utterance. Finally, I also examine another incomplete construction que no/sí and discuss some issues related to the affirmative polarity sí in other constructions.
