Abstract

Martina Björklund: Constructions Using po + Dative to Mark a Goal-Directed Activity in Russian The article chiefly describes the variants of the general construction NP [po + NPdat], where po + dative marks a goal-directed activity (e.g. menedžer po prodažam ‘sales manager’). The investigation uses data extracted from the Russian National Corpus. A new classification of the types of semantic elements that may form a noun phrase dermined by po + dative is established: agent, companion, phase, action, evaluation, result, instrument, and place. In addition, the semantic roles of the complements of po are defined for each variant of the construction: action or object/theme (for all variants), place (for agent and companion only), and collective agent (for companion). Finally, I touch upon the use of po + dative to mark a goal-directed activity in certain verb phrases and alone in the predicative function.
