Abstract
The article is devoted to the internal political events in Indonesia in the period since the end of November 1996 till May 13, 1998 and the role of the current candidate for the post of president of Indonesia Prabowo Subianto in these events. Numerous ethno-confessional conflicts that took place during the last period of the New Order rule, Prabowo's attempts to secure the power of his father-in-law, President Suharto, and the tragic events of May 12, 1998 in Jakarta are examined.
