Abstract

In 1888, before becoming famous, the American novelist Edith Wharton took a cruise in the Mediterranean. This experience gave rise to a manuscript: The Cruise of the Vanadis, which was rediscovered years later, in 1990, and somewhat by chance, in the municipal library of Hyères. Based on this material, which was perhaps a precursor to the writer's future work, the analysis concentrates on the writing of navigation before focusing on the geography of the landscapes and the history of Greek and Turkish civilisations.
