Abstract

Despite advances in neuroimaging, the physiological basis of abnormal human perceptions, such as hallucinations, has remained elusive. Electrophysiological studies in animals suggest that synchronous high-frequency cortical oscillations (40 Hz or γ-band electroencephalogram [EEG]) may reflect the process of perception. 1 Gray CM König P Engel A Singer W Oscillatory responses in cat visual cortex exhibit inter-columnar synchronization which reflects global stimulus properties.
