Abstract

The article analyzes briefly some definitions of the concept “apology” contained in various English-language vocabulary sources. The problems of verbal association in direct human communication are of researchers’ constant and genuine interest. Also the paper presents the main results of studying the data of the free associative experiment aimed to identify the cognitive features of the concept “apology” as it is understood by modern native English speakers. The core and the near periphery of the concept “apology” are identified. Scientific novelty of the study is determined by the fact that the concept “apology” is examined through the analysis of dictionary definitions and the free associative experiment.
