Abstract

This paper is to develop a pre-service English teachers’ education syllabus in AI-based elementary school classes. The research method includes literature analysis to sort out the widely adopted technology and their application area of language skills. It also includes a focused group interview (FGI) of 20 juniors and seniors in a pre-service institution. The findings are: The widely adopted technologies are chatbot, AI speakers, robot, machine translation and automatic scoring. The language skills are predominantly speaking and voice interaction appeared in chatbots, AI speakers and robots. Despite the relative low frequency found in machine translation and assessment in the literature analysis, FGI results showed that related technologies for written language skills and assessment were in high demands from students. Reflecting such students’ demands gained from the FGI, machine translation and assessment were included in the syllabus respectively representing written language skills and speaking assessment. Student also demanded in FGI that teaching methodology should be more practical and experience-based so that students can utilize the technology for their teaching. A final revision is suggested to include practical teaching methodologies and contents in the syllabus based on the FGI feedback of pre-service teachers.
