Abstract

It has been known that four reactions are concerned in the enzymic synthesis of glucosyl donors involved in starch biosynthesis. In this experiment, the presence of enzymes catalyzing these reactions was examined for enzyme preparations from leaves and storage tissues of various higher plants. ADP-glucose pyrophosphorylase activity was detected in all the enzyme preparations from the leaves, whereas the activity was not detected in many preparations from the storage tissues. UDP-glucose pyrophosphorylase activity was detected in all the enzyme preparations. Sucrose synthetase activity was detected in all the enzyme preparations. Synthesis of UDP-glucose from sucrose and UDP by the sucrose synthetase, however, was found in few preparations from the leaves and in all the preparations from the storage tissues.
