Abstract

This article dwells on the academic and teaching activities of Vladimir A. Karelin (born 1952), a well-known teacher and historian who has studied the history of Russian-Norwegian relations. The main stages in his life are described, key areas and results of his research are characterized. V.A. Karelin is a prominent specialist on the history of Russia of the 19th and 20th centuries and the history of Russian-Norwegian relations. He has participated in a large number of international scientific projects with colleagues from the universities of Groningen (the Netherlands) and Tromsø (Norway), which resulted in the publication of study guides, scholarly articles, and a monograph on Svalbard. Moreover, he initiated the creation of the Barents Faculty at Murmansk State Pedagogical Institute (currently, Murmansk Arctic State University), which successfully carried out scientific, publishing and educational programmes aimed at developing international cooperation within the Barents Region.
