Abstract

Tumors of major and minor salivary glands are relatively uncommon, representing between 2 and 10% of all oral neoplasms. A total of 25 cases reported as salivary gland tumors of oral cavity in the Second Department of Oral Surgery, Kyushu Dental College Hospital, during the period from 1978 to 1982, were clinically analysed. The following results were obtained. 1. A series of 25 cases of salivary gland tumors has been reported. Its incidence was seen in 0.34% of outpatients and in 12.2% of the patients with oral neoplasm. In this series of 25 cases, there were 17 cases (68.0%) of benign tumor and 8 cases (32.0%) of malignant tumor. 2. A total of 25 cases was a tumor originating from minor salivary glands. The salivary gland tumor in the majority of 25 cases was located on the hard palate. 3. Of the benign salivary gland tumor (17 cases), 13 cases (76.5%) were between 30 and 50 years of age (the average 49.8 years). Of the malignant salivary gland tumor (8 cases), 6 cases (75%) were over 30 years of age (the average 47.5 years). 4. As to the incidence by sex, the incidence of benign tumor was slightly higher in males. Also in the malignant tumor, the incidence was slightly higher in females. However, males and females were equally affected by the salivary gland tumors. 5. The complaint most commonly reported was a painless mass. The recorded known duration of benign tumors showed a range of 1 month to 12 years. That of malignant tumors showed a range of 5 days to 6 years. 6. The majority of the salivary gland tumors were thumb-tip size. In only 3 cases was there a history of pain. Ulceration was apparent in only 4 cases. 7. This series was found histopathologically to be ; in benign tumor (17 cases), plemorphic adenoma was 16 cases and warthin's tumor was 1 case. In malignant tumor (8 cases), mucoepidermoid carcinoma was 4 cases, adenoid cystic carcinoma was 3 cases and adenocarcinoma was 1 case. 8. Treatment was performed mostly by surgical excision of the lesion.
