Abstract

In order to conduct an investigation on patients who appointed orthodontic treatment at Kyushu Dental College Hospital, we collected the date of patients who came to consult during the 5 years from 1977 to 1981 and sorted them by sex, age at appointment, classification of malocclusion and residing area. The results were as follows : 1) The total number of patients during that period was 3, 243. Of these, 1, 524 (47.0%) received appointed treatment. 2) Of those appointed, 598 (39.2%) were male and 962 (60.8%) were female. Female patients amounted to nearly three fifths of the total. 3) By classification of malocclusion, the percentage of each kind was as follows : mandibular protrusion (44.4%), crowding (28.1%), maxillary protrusion (12.1%), cleft lip, jaw and palate (7.8%) and others. The percentage of male to female was as follows : 39.5 to 60.5 in mandibular protrusion, 35.7 to 64.3 in crowding, 34.8 to 65.2 in maxillary protrusion, 53.8 to 46.2 in cleft lip, jaw and palate. 4) By age, patients received appointed treatment at age of 7 and 8 formed the largest group and about 90% of the total treatment by appointment by the age of 12. 5) Of those received appointed treatment, 1, 343 (88.4%) resided in Fukuoka prefecture, including 998 (65.5%) in Kitakyushu city. The remaining 177 (11.6%) were from other areas.
