Abstract

This paper investigates the distribution of major earthquakes in the world and China in the past 17 years. Most of the world’s major earthquakes occurred in the Pacific Rim seismic belt, and most of the China’s earthquakes occurred in the Himalayas and the slopes around the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. According to the large earthquakes happened in China in the past thousand years, a linear seismic zone was formed from Lijiang in Yunnan to Haicheng in Liaoning. The probability of a major earthquake in the vicinity was much higher than other places.
