Abstract

The architectural manuals "Tatami-shikiyohinagata" for the floor design in Japanese traditional houses can be classified into five types : Type I : The etiquette codes at the "gerination stage" (lit. Hoga-ki) in the Muromachi period. Type II : The etiquette codes at the "formation stage" (lit. Seiritsu-ki) in the Azuchi-momoyama period. Type III : The architectural codes of the "developement stage" (lit. Hatten-ki) in the Edo period. Type IV : The "Ise" etiquette codes at the "popularization stage" (lit. Fukyu-ki) in the Edo period. Type V : The "Ogasawara" etiquette codes at the "popularization stage" (lit. Fukyu-ki) in the Edo period.
