Abstract

The paper studies the creative work of Viktor Dmitrievich Kolupaev (1936-2001), a Tomsk science fiction writer, member of the USSR Union of Writers. The research aims to identify the features of representation of the category of fictional space in the poetics of the fiction writer’s short prose based on the material of the cycle “Captain of the Thunderer” (1982). Scientific originality of the research lies in studying V. D. Kolupaev’s short prose from the viewpoint of its spatial and temporal organisation, as well as in involving the previously unexplored cycle as research material. The paper analyses the main fictional spatial image - the cosmic one. As a result, the use of the image of the cosmos as an Other traditional for science fiction, serving to explore spiritual and moral issues has been revealed. The imagological content is expressed through the depiction of outer space. The chronotope, character system, onomastics of the cycle contribute to their discovery through the prism of the Other. It has been determined that the category of fictional space represents the specifics of the author’s individual worldview, which consists in combining the lyrical and hard types of science fiction literature in order to depict a range of social issues concerning the writer.
