Abstract

This investigation was carried out in the Dental Hospital of Kyushu Dental College in order to observe improvements on fillings and fixed prostheses from January 1979 through December 1983. The results obtained were as follows : 1. Of the 1102 patients, 32.5% had maxillary prostheses, 23.7% had mandibular and 43.8% had both. 2. Females outnumbered males by 2 : 1. 3. Most patients were between the ages of 20 and 50 years. 4. The averege frequency of treatment in both jaws was about double that of one jaw. 5. The number of maxillary prostheses was larger than that of mandibular in all years. 6. Maxillary prostheses numbered 2, 719, 40.7% of which were fabricated as full cast crowns. 7. Mandibular prostheses numbered 2, 095, 62.5% of which were fabricated as full cast crowns. 8. Maxillary prostheses were found in the following locations and frequency : the first molar (15.8%), the second bicuspid (15.7%), the central incisor (14.5%), the first bicuspid (14.1%), the lateral incisor (13.1%) and the cuspid (11.7%). 9. Mandibular prostheses were found in the following locations and frequency : the secound bicuspid (21.4%), the first molar (19.5%), the first bicuspid (18.8%), the second molar (17.7%) and the cuspid (10.5%). 10. Non-vital teeth outnumbered vital teeth by 2 : 1. 11. 54.7% of vital teeth were fabricated as inlays, and 60.9% of non-vital teeth were fabricated as full cast crowns. 12. 81.5% of maxillary bridges and 87.4% of mandibular bridges were fabricated as 1-pontic. 13. Bridges were fabricated most frequently for the lower posterior segment (81.5% of maxillary bridges), followed by the upper posterior segment (51.4% of mandibular bridges). 14. The number of missing central and lateral incisors and missing second bicuspid or first molar was most frequent and about the same for both maxilla and mandible.
