Abstract

A major question to be dealt with when it came to restore autonomies of repressed peoples in the south of the RSFSR in the 1950s was that of determining and demarcation of borders with neighboring regions. A contestable question for Kalmykia became the initiative that territories of its two districts be returned and delimitation of land use borders with Astrakhan Oblast be completed. The article introduces a series of documents by Executive Committees of Astrakhan Oblast and Stavropol Krai Soviets of Working Deputies regarding the formation of Kalmykia’s borders in 1957–1958. The work concludes the pendency of the territorial and land arguments between Kalmykia and Astrakhan Oblast is also caused by similar unresolved disputes between Stavropol Krai and Astrakhan Oblast that had preceded the restoration of Kalmyk autonomy as such.
