Abstract

This paper examined how the independence movement was reproduced and organized in a film about the independence movement that was created between 1945 and 1959. During the same period, films featuring the independence movement appeared between 1946 and 1949 and during 1959, intensively. In particular, the 3.1 movement was the main material in films dealing with independent movements. “The record of 3.1 Revolution”(「삼일혁명기」 1947) and “Yu Gwan Sun”(「유관순」 1948), premiered in the Post-Liberation Period dealing with the 3.1 movement, presented a substantial part of the images of the 3.1 movement in the current textbook. In particular, “Ahn Chang Nam”(「안창남」 1949) which was released after the establishment of the government, has increased the position in the 3.1 movement. In this movie, the 3.1 movement is a collective memory shared by all Koreans, and it is described as a reason why Koreans devote themselves to independence. It was the same in movies made in 1959 that the 3.1 movement was emphasized in the history of independence movements. In the “Yu Gwan Sun”(「유관순」) re-created in 1959, her motive of resistence has been linked to Shilla as the main stream of Korean history, which has been expanded and reproduced by Japanese researchers after the late 19th century. Moreover, in the “Stars without names”(「이름 없는 별들」 1959) Gwangju Student Movement was depicted as having succeeded the spirit of 3.1. In other words, 3.1 movement and the spirit of 3.1 were described as the ethnicity of Koreans alone and the origin of the independence movement. On the other hand, films in the 1959 also reflected the current situation of the election, even though it dealt with independent movements. “Independence Association and young Lee Shung-Man”(「독립협회와 청년 리승만」 1959) was a representative work which reflected the situation of the election. It even distorted historical facts to show that Mr. Lee was a hero and such situations can be seen in other movies. For example, “The March 1st Movement”(「삼일독립운동」 1959) described Mr. Lee, who was unrelated to 3.1 movement, had a important role in preparing for it. In other words, even dealing with 3.1 movement, it reflected the current situation of elections.
