Abstract

Clarinet compositions occupy a significant place in the creative work of Chinese composers of the middle of the XX century. The paper aims to reveal national specificity of Zhang Wu’s creative work most vividly represented in “Variations on Subei Theme”. Scientific originality of the study lies in the fact that for the first time in domestic musicology, the researcher analyzes Zhang Wu’s composition through the prism of synthesis of European classical and romantic compositional norms and Chinese musical tradition. As a result, it is shown that the work is experimental in nature and harmoniously combines national and foreign compositional and genre elements. The conclusion is made that the mentioned period was crucial to the development of clarinet music.
