Abstract

The purpose of the work is to reveal the role of the priests in the formation and development of the main archival and library institutions of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church of Eastern Galicia (UGCC) of the specified period. The methodology of the research lies in applying of the set of the historical, comparative and systemic methods, which allows to outline the main directions of the formation of archives and libraries as important scientific institutions; to substantiate the significance of the Greek Catholic clergy in expanding the archival and library network of the region. The scientific novelty is due to the fact that in Ukrainian cultural studies, for the first time, an attempt is made to analyze the significant contribution of the Greek Catholic clergy of Eastern Galicia in preserving of the archival documents and the development of the libraries 1921–1946. Conclusions. The consideration of the archival and library network of Eastern Galicia has shown that the Greek Catholic clergy managed to create the serious cultural and scientific institutions which for a long period of time remained the main knowledge centers for the Greek-Catholic clergy and secular people. The employees of the institutions of the UGCC, thanks to the high level of education, constantly took care of the improvement of catalogues and improvement of materials storage conditions, carried out an important research work, and contributed to the increase of new stock incomes. As a result of the establishment of the Soviet regime in the western Ukrainian lands, the reorganization processes of the well-developed pre-war library system in Eastern Galicia began. Those processes led to transportation, theft and mass losses of the valuable stock collections.
