Abstract

This study aimed to provide historical reference for the Daehan Empire military band’s uniform for a reenactment performance. The goal of this study was to create the design for the military band uniform that was used during the Daehan Empire. The style from 1901 was selected, which was the year the military band was first featured for the Emperor’s birthday [만수성절 萬壽聖節] on September 7 and also when the empire was relatively secured. In this study, the regulations regarding the army uniforms [육군장졸복장제식] from July 2, 1900, were analyzed as a baseline, and then the 1901 regulations were added. Photos of military bands of the period and images of the military band in the 1906 royal wedding ceremony scroll were also examined. Both officers and enlisted men were part of the military band; as uniforms of the two ranks were different, they were examined separately. Based on the above research results, line drawings of the cap, jacket, pants, and accessories and full-color illustrations of the figures in the 1901 military band uniform were produced. The results of this study not only provide source material but also synthesize and visualize data about historical military band uniforms pieced together by costume historians. The 1901 design of the Daehan Empire military band uniform, of which visual references did not exist, was restored. Military band uniforms from this period produced based on this study will contribute to more realistic historical reenactment events and cultural content such as films set in that period.
