Abstract

The purpose of this clinico-statistical study was to ascertain the surgical methods for jaw deformities in our department for the past 15 years. Especially, the surgical procedure for various diagnoses was investigated by use of clinical statistics. Orthognathic surgeries have been performed on 155 patients with disturbance of mastication, esthetics and speech, who visited the First Department of Oral Surgery, Kyushu Dental College Hospital from 1978 to 1992. The ratio between male and female was 1 : 1.7. The average age was 20.6 for male and 19.7 for female. The majority (83.9%) of all jaw diformities were diagnosed as mandibular prognathism : simple mandibular prognathism (67.1%), mandibular prognathism with open bite (8.4%) and mandibular prognathism with mandibular asymmetry (8.4%). Sagittal split ramus osteotomy for mandible (Obwegeser-Dal Pont's method) has been carried out in 72.9% of all patients. Genioplasty was done in 12.4%. The average time of surgery was 2 h 23 min with a range from 55 min to 5 h 10 min. The average amount of blood loss during surgery was 278 ml with a range from 49 ml to 1174 ml. The palsy of lower lip and mental region just after surgery was recognised in 38.1% in postoperative complication.
