Abstract

This study aims to identify the effect of 12-week basketball exercise program on body composition, physical fitness, and concentration in male elementary school students. To achieve this purpose, 12-week exercise program was executed in male sixth graders in elementary schools located in City S, Gyeonggido. Our findings are as follows. First, 12-week basketball exercise program had a positive effect on body fat percentage, among body composition factors, in male elementary school students. Second, 12-week basketball exercise program had a positive effect on muscular strength, muscular endurance, and quick adaptation, among physical fitness factors, in male elementary school students. Third, 12-week basketball exercise program had a positive effect on concentration in male elementary school students. Taken together, 6th grader male elementary school students’ participation in basketball exercise program reduced body fat percentage, among body composition factors. It also improved muscular strength, muscular endurance, and quick adaptation, among physical fitness factors. It was effective for enhancing concentratoin too. Therefore, it appears that such basketball exercise program is effective for enhancing physical and mental functions as it prevents physical strength from deteriorating due to elementary school students’ insufficient exercise and obesity. In addition, it has a positive effect on concentration that may be helpful for enhancing learning ability.
