Abstract

Background Paris’ equation is used for the calculation of residual life of the tanks with crack, which connects the crack growth rate with stress intensity factor (SIF). SIF is dependent on the geometry of the construction, crack parameters and loading conditions. Aims and Objectives The aim is to substantiate the finite element model of the design scheme of steel vertical tank with a surface crack. To calculate the value of SIF for a particular size of the tank and the various crack parameters. Methods For calculating of the stressed-deformed state, SIF is used the finite element method, implemented in the software package ANSYS 14.5. Results Based on the numerical research there are obtained the values of SIF of the first kind for cracks with various geometries in the pipe junction area of the tank capacity 10 000 m 3 were calculated. The obtained data could be used to calculate the residual life of this type of tanks. The proposed algorithm allows to calculate the SIF for the other geometrical parameters of the reservoir.
