Abstract

This report summarizes the result of drift-bottle experiments at the west entrance of Tugaru Strait, Hokkaido, Japan, which were carried out twelve times during May 1956 to March 1957, where 1200 drift-bottles were dropped.There are two types of recovering of drift-bottles, the one is “SUMMER TYPE” and the other is “WINTER TYPE”. 452 drift-bottles were recovered and 32.5% of them were drifted to the coast of Japan Sea, 39.4% to the coast of Tugaru Strait and 28% to the coast of Pacific. During February, they were drifted mostly to the coast of Japan Sea, during October and November to the coast of Tugaru Strait and during May and January to the coast of Pacific. The state in which the current of Tugaru Strait branches from the Tusima current is very changeable depending on time and place.
