Abstract

To obtain the activity of ZnO in slags, the value of the equilibrium constant of the reaction, ZnO (s) + CO=Zn (g) +CO2, must be known. There are, however, considerable differences among the available data of this constant. Therefore, the value was determined as the first step of studies for the activity. The method was as follows: A CO-CO2 gas mixture was passed through a layer of pure ZnO pellets which were kept at a given temperature. The gas mixture (CO, CO2 and Zn vapor), equilibrated with ZnO, was led into a water cooled -condenser, in which Zn vapor was captured as solid then analysed volumetrically. The equilibrium constantwas calculated from volumes of CO and CO2 in the initlial gas mixtures and amounts of Zn.In the range between 898°C and 1112°C, the following empirical equation was obtained.logK=-9, 740/T+6.12 where K is the equilibrium constant and T is absolute temperature. The error of the value of K in this equation was estimated to be about 10 per cent.
