Abstract
1. 1. A marked reduction in the number of circulating haemocytes concomitant with the formation of discrete haemocyte clumps in the gills was induced in C. maenas by injection of β 1,3-glucans. but not other soluble glycans. 2. 2. The haemocytes were very sensitive to the presence of the glucans, with doses as low as 10−7g/crab still effective in diminishing the cell count. 3. 3. Since β 1,3-glucans are known to specifically activate the prophenoloxidase activating system within the haemocytes, these findings offer further support for the role of this pathway in non-self recognition by crustaceans.
