Abstract

The number of children has been increasing in recent years as China has implemented a policy to have two children. In the 1990s, as the Chinese market grew, people's interest in the medical environment has been increasing despite the improvement in medical standards. Currently, many Chinese children's hospitals have been renovated and are not much different from general hospitals without considering the needs of users. This study clearly defines users in children's hospital spaces as children's patients, families, and medical staff, and organizes five space demands based on their characteristics and demands. Also, through theoretical prior study of children's hospitals in China, four common spaces for children's hospitals and outpatient departments, and interesting design characteristics of spaces. It creates a safe, comfortable, convenient, efficient space and a framework for analysis. Four children's hospitals in Shanghai, China, conducted field investigations and analyzed the space according to the standards of space evaluation and suggested direction of space design. As a result, first, in the interesting spatial characteristics, most of them were staying in the design of the general hospitals, not considering the children patients, who are the main consumers of the children 's hospitals. There is no differentiation of colors and materials, and design expressions such as sculptures and ornaments are monotonous and insufficient. Therefore, diversity appropriate to the level of children is required, and various interests such as play facilities and digital media are required. Second, it is necessary to prevent noise from pleasant spatial characteristics, and to provide a warm light source and green environment. Third, safe details considering children and convenient service facilities are required. Fourth, the signs should focus on the child's eyes and make them fit the child's eye level and make them warm and fun.
