Abstract

The shipping industry has a key role in world markets as most of the international trade is transported by sea, in particular the transport of liquid bulk cargo is considered one of the most important cargoes in the world due to necessity to use them in modern societies. As a springboard for the transport of liquid cargo is an integral part of global maritime transport, the elaboration of this dissertation deals with the study of the structure and operating conditions of the tanker ship market as well as the presentation - analysis of charter agreements in the specific market. The main concern of this research is the presentation of fundamental concepts of the freight market through the theoretical approach and the analysis of the main freight agreements to enable an in-depth understanding of its operating conditions and at the same time to highlight the important role of contract terms and conditions for charter’s profitability and to avoid conflicts. Methodology: For the extraction of valuable information, the secondary research is chosen as the most appropriate method, since the study of the subject is attempted at a theoretical level. The secondary research is based on the bibliographic review of Greek and Foreign literature on international charters in the field of maritime transport of liquid cargo, relevant studies, scientific articles and official websites but also on the analysis of the terms of standard charter agreements (SHELLVOY6, TANKERVOY87) The work is structured in six chapters: In order to obtain a global picture of the shipping market, first basic reports on the shipping market (structure, distinctions, factors, sectors interaction) are presented, then the structure, characteristics, factors, shipping cycles, freight market indexes and tankers fleet of the shipping freight market are analyzed. The fourth chapter deals with the institution of charters (main forms, characteristics, international organizations, charters and the WorldScale index). Subsequently the fifth chapter focuses on the presentation of standard charter structure, advantages, authors, categories, structure and critical analysis of travel charter and time charter parties. The sixth chapter attempts the brief presentation of charter tankers as well as conditions summary, comparison and critical analysis of the charter SHELLVOY6 and TANKERVOY87. Following in the end the summary of conclusions and comments.
