Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine participant motives factor for sport and exercise of university students in America and Korea. The subject for the study were 487 undergraduates (282 Korea students and 205 America students) who were involved at the Univerity in America and Korea. The questionnaire used in this study were Personal Incentives for exercise Questionnaire(PIEQ; Duda & Tappe, 1989). This questionnaire consisted of 48 items for sport and exercise participation. An exploratory factor analysis identified six factors: health/fitness, competition, challenge, physical appearance, social relationship, achievement. This study indicated results as follows; First, university students in America rated health/fitness, competition, challenge, physical appearance, and achievement significantly higher than students in Korea, But, university students in Korea rated social relationship significantly factor higher than students in America. Secondly, Male student of the United States rated social relationships, competition, achievement motivation higher than that of the female student. The competition of male are highly factors than that of female in Korea. Thirdly, the low age of U.S. college students had high motivation factor of appearance and competition, But, A middle-age college students in Korea rated health/fitness, social relationships higher than other age-groups. And the longer U.S. students participating in sports had highly competitive factors. Korean university student had high motivation factor of health/fitness, social relationships, competition, and achievement.
